- World Population Density, 1996 is a polygon theme representing population density worldwide. Density measures are given in the attribute table as one of nine classes: 0 - unpopulated 1 - 1 people per square kilometer 2 - 1 - 10 people per square kilometer 3 - 10 - 25 people per square kilometer 4 - 25 - 50 people per square kilometer 5 - 50 - 100 people per square kilometer 6 - 100 - 200 people per square kilometer 7 - 200 - 400 people per square kilometer 8 - 400 - 800 people per square kilometer 9 - 800 people per square kilometer
- Purpose
- For educational, non-commercial purposes. This dataset is appropriate for use in a GIS.
- Supplemental Information
- The human population has been growing throughout history in both size and inhabited area. Furthermore, the rates of growth and expansion have been accelerating. The population of the earth is estimated to have been 300 million people in the year 1000. During the 17th century the rate of population growth abruptly accelerated and territories that were poorly developed began to be settled, especially through migration. This new settlement sharply increased the area of inhabited land. Demographers forecast that the population of the earth will grow from 5.6 billion people in 1994 to exceed 7.9 billion people by 2020. The world demographic situation is expected to become aggravated because of exploding populations in developing countries. The enormous population will make increasingly difficult the activities of supplying people with food, raw materials, and power. It will also be difficult to mitigate the demographic impact on the environment.
