- Abstract
- Frost-free Period (Polygon) is a polygon theme representing areas of similar duration of frost free periods. Frost-free period is the period when minimum air temperatures near the ground are above zero degrees Celsius so frost does not occur. The duration of the annual frost-free period is one of the principal climatic characteristics that affects the development of biota, human life, and economic activity.
- Purpose
- For educational, non-commercial purposes. This dataset is appropriate for use in a GIS.
- Supplemental Information
- Frost-free Period -- Worldwide distribution pattern The frost-free period decreases toward the poles and, to a lesser extent, from the continental margins toward the interior. Frost-free period is classified into four zones with different frost regimes, as follows: 1. Tropical zone -- no frosts 2. Subtropical zone -- frosts in winter do not occur every year 3. Temperate zone -- periods of spring and autumn frosts are divided by a warm summer and cold winter 4. Cold zone -- frosts are possible during the summer Frosts do not occur in the plains of the tropical belt and on the coasts up to 30 to 35 degrees latitude in both the northern and southern hemispheres. In some years frosts can occur in the desert highlands of Africa, Mexico, Australia, and Brazil up to nearly 10 degrees latitude. In high mountains, frost periods occur at all latitudes. The frost-free period in the temperate belts decreases from 10 to 11 months at the boundary of the tropical belt to two to two-and-a-half months at the polar circles. The period decreases about two months per 10 degrees of latitude. Mountains are azonal factors. There are no practically frost-free periods in the far north.
