Abstract
Shapefile representing significant roads in Africa during the 1970s. Data were extracted from Michelin Africa maps published that decade and drawn at a scale of 1:4,000,000. For more detailed information on this dataset's production, please refer to the "supplemental information" portion of this record.
Purpose
For visualizing roads using GIS software.
Supplemental Information
To create this dataset, three 1:4,000,000 scale Michelin Africa maps published in the 1970s were first scanned at 400 DPI and georeferenced with the assistance of 2015 data from the GADM or Database of Global Administrative Areas. The specific maps used were: Africa Central and South/Madagascar (1974), Africa North and West (1976), and Africa North-East (1977). Road network centerlines were extracted from these georeferenced maps, assigned attribute values according to the map legends, and edge-matched to create a seamless dataset. Funding for this project was provided in part by the graduate student project fund, in conjunction with NSF project #10004995, and in part by Princeton University Library’s geographic data collection development fund. The project was completed in 2015, but the data were subject to a 5-year embargo.
