- Description:
-
This layer was originally developed alongside the development of the Wisconsin Trails Network Plan Update GIS mapping application.
This layer displays state trails in Wisconsin. State trails
have been segmented into numerous smaller segments when a change in any of the
listed attributes change along a state trail: Segment Name, Corridor Number (of
network plan corridors), Surface Type, Trail Manager, County, Trail Pass
Required, Open Status, Rail Trail, Allowed Use, or overlap with other trails.
This layer was updated for with the 2023 Wisconsin Trails Network Plan Update
and will receive updates as the above listed attributes change throughout the
state trails. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail and North Country National Scenic Trail are not included in this layer, though it is recommended and encouraged that these are used alongside this state trails layer when working with Wisconsin state trails, due to their state trail classification. Both the Ice Age and North Country National Scenic Trails are considered to be both state trails and national scenic trails and are available for download via the links provided. Some trail segments are included in this layer that have been acquired but have not been developed yet. These segments have surface type and other attributes omitted as they are subject to change during their development process. Water Trail Disclaimer:Water travel is potentially hazardous. There can be no
guarantee whatsoever of your safety when participating in kayaking,
stand up paddle boarding or other water travel. Shore, weather, and water conditions
are in a constant state of change, and you must check weather, tide, currents,
and flow data on your own. Be aware of warnings for segments on which you
plan to travel. You may check current flow data via USGS (https://waterdata.usgs.gov/wi/nwis/rt).
You should also confirm, via personal contact with or calls to government
agencies, that water trail sites are still available and that conditions have
not changed. You must be careful not to exceed your capabilities and must be
prepared to use alternate landing spots in the event that a water trail site
cannot be reached for some reason. It is your responsibility to review and plan
your route before embarking and to be knowledgeable of water trail you plan to
utilize. Use of the Lake Michigan State Water Trail is recommended for
experience paddlers only. Launch and other fees may apply and may vary by site
along the water trail and it is your responsibility to review fee requirements
ahead of arrival or use. The Lake Michigan State Water Trail segment may be a simplified
depictions of the water trail. As such, total mileage may vary and it is not
intended for use in navigation, determining legal land ownership, or public
access. It is your responsibility to verify this information before use of the water
trail. It is your responsibility to learn and understand the proper
techniques associated with safe water travel and to fully accept and
assume all risk of damages, injury or death that may result from attempting to
travel to or between the sites described on the following mapping system. Please reach out to Wisconsin DNR Parks & Recreation or Property Planning section staff with questions on this layer, or email DNRFLPropertyPlanningPublicInput@Wisconsin.gov.
