Mile markers (also known as mileposts/MM) are varying sized green signs identifying the distance (in whole miles) from the beginning of the interstate (route) in each state. In cases where routes are measured in increments shorter than whole miles (usually in more populated areas), the associated routes and mileages are on blue signs. Both sign types assist road users in estimating their progress, provide a means for identifying the location of emergency incidents and traffic crashes and aid in highway maintenance and servicing. Where the interstate (route) intersects a state line, mile marker numbering typically begins at zero. When a route starts within state lines, mile marker numbering begins at the interchange where the route starts. The numbers then increase as you travel north (on north/south roadways) or east (on east/west roadways). Where other roadways intersect, the associated exit number will often mirror the mile marker numbers. Mile markers are not installed on all state roadways. Any questions about this dataset can be sent to the following email: DOTDLDTSDBTOTOAMSSupport@dot.wi.gov.The mile marker data values should be accurate to 50 feet. Due to WisDOT's reporting process and/or sign maintenance agreements, a record representing a Milepost Marker or Enhanced Reference Marker may list a county that is different from the county in which the sign is physically installed. In addition, in areas where routes run concurrently (i.e., a route has multiple designations), the route(s) displayed on the Enhanced Reference Marker signs may not always adhere to the WisDOT's order of highway predominance. For example, there are segments where IH 39 and IH 90 run concurrently, in which IH 39 is the dominant route, but the signs display IH 90.
