- Abstract
- This data represents LiDAR elevation information for Forest County, WI in 2017. The following derivative products are available: bare earth points, classified LAS, hydro breaklines, and a countywide DEM. [The Forest County lidar project area covers approximately 1056 square miles which includes a 100 meter buffer around the county boundary. The lidar data was acquired at a nominal point spacing (NPS) of 0.7 meters and a single swath nominal point density (NPD) of 2.0. Project specifications are based on Forest County requirements and on the U.S. Geological Survey National Geospatial Program LiDAR Base Specification, Version 1.2. The data was developed based on a horizontal projection/datum of NAD83(2011) / Forest County (ftUS) (EPSG Code: 7606), and vertical datum of NAVD88 - Geoid12B (Feet). LiDAR data was acquired using the Leica ALS70 SN7161 and 7178 Sensors from April 22, 2017 through April 25, 2017 in seven total lifts. Acquisition occurred with leaves absent from deciduous trees, when no snow was present on the ground, and with rivers at or below normal levels.]
- Purpose
- This data is intended for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production, or to provide a basemap to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. [This data, along with its derivatives, is the result of a countywide elevation mapping with cooperative partnerships from Bayfield County, Wisconsin DOA, and the USGS 3DEP program. This data was produced from lidar collected in October 2015, November 2015, and April 2016, which was processed and delivered in 2016.]
- Supplemental Information
- Data is available for download from: https://web.s3.wisc.edu/wsco-wisconsinview/lidar/ Below are the definitions for each LiDAR derivative product. This can be entered here in Supplemental Information for each one present in a county. Bare Earth Points: Bare earth LiDAR is digital elevation data of the terrain surface consisting of irregularly spaced points, each with x/y location coordinates and z-value. The data have been subjected to automated and manual editing to remove vegetation, buildings, and other man-made structures. Classified LAS: Point classification using semi-automated techniques on the point cloud to assign the feature type associated with each point. Lidar points can be classified into a number of categories including bare earth or ground, top of canopy, and water. The different classes are defined using numeric integer codes in the LAS files. Contours: A line through all contiguous points of equal elevation value. Contours are vector features used to represent the elevation of a landscape in a relatively familiar way. They are typically used for basemaps and general topographic representation. Derived Terrain: A vector data set composed of regularly spaced points and natural features such as ridges and breaklines. A DTM augments a DEM by including linear features of the bare-earth terrain. Hydro Breaklines: Breaklines maintain the definition of water-related features in an elevation model. They are used to capture linear discontinuities in the surface, lake shorelines, single-line drains for small rivers, and double-line drains for large rivers. Countywide Digital Elevation Model (DEM): A DEM represents the bare-Earth surface, removing all natural and built features. The dataset contains a single file covering the entire county. Tiled Digital Elevation Model (DEM): A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) represents the bare-Earth surface, removing all natural and built features. The data contains (possibly) hundreds of individual files available to download as small tiled geographic areas over the extent of an entire county. Digital Surface Model (DSM): A Digital Surface Model (DSM) captures both the natural and built/artificial features of the environment.
