- Abstract
- This data represents LiDAR elevation information for Oconto County, Wisconsin in 2005. The following derivative products are available: bare earth points, 2-foot contours, hydro breaklines, a countywide DEM, tile DEMs, a countywide DSM, and tile DSMs. [Airborne Laser Terrain Mapping Survey utilizing dual-frequency airborne GPS control and conventional control were conducted in Oconto County. The horizontal coordinates are referenced to the Oconto County Coordinate System NAD83, (Feet), and the vertical datum is NAVD88 (Feet).]
- Purpose
- This data is intended for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production, or to provide a basemap to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. [Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data collection and quality control has been conducted in accordance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) guidelines and specifications for gathering data necessary to create digital elevation models using the guidelines and specifications in place at the beginning of the task order. The survey includes select areas over and within the project area. The Oconto County LiDAR Survey was performed using government furnished maps outlining specific areas for the purpose of gathering data necessary to create digital elevation models in accordance with the guidelines and specifications directed by owner, and contract Scope of Work.]
- Supplemental Information
- Data is available for download from: https://web.s3.wisc.edu/wsco-wisconsinview/lidar/ Detailed, original metadata accompanying this LiDAR data is available inside the ‘Metadata’ folder from WisconsinView. [The data design specifications for this product includes several directed to insure its quality, consistency, and usability. These specifications address some of the technical issues associated with ortho image production: 1) the tops of buildings and other structures elevated above the surface of the ground 'tilt' away from the center point of the source photography and from their own bases as a result of perspective and their height which is not compensated for in digital elevation models of the ground surface and 2) individual ortho images may be assembled from several source images (strips).] Bare Earth Points: Bare earth LiDAR is digital elevation data of the terrain surface consisting of irregularly spaced points, each with x/y location coordinates and z-value. The data have been subjected to automated and manual editing to remove vegetation, buildings, and other man-made structures. Classified LAS: Point classification using semi-automated techniques on the point cloud to assign the feature type associated with each point. Lidar points can be classified into a number of categories including bare earth or ground, top of canopy, and water. The different classes are defined using numeric integer codes in the LAS files. Contours: A line through all contiguous points of equal elevation value. Contours are vector features used to represent the elevation of a landscape in a relatively familiar way. They are typically used for basemaps and general topographic representation. Derived Terrain: A vector data set composed of regularly spaced points and natural features such as ridges and breaklines. A DTM augments a DEM by including linear features of the bare-earth terrain. Hydro Breaklines: Breaklines maintain the definition of water-related features in an elevation model. They are used to capture linear discontinuities in the surface, lake shorelines, single-line drains for small rivers, and double-line drains for large rivers. Countywide Digital Elevation Model (DEM): A DEM represents the bare-Earth surface, removing all natural and built features. The dataset contains a single file covering the entire county. Tiled Digital Elevation Model (DEM): A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) represents the bare-Earth surface, removing all natural and built features. The data contains (possibly) hundreds of individual files available to download as small tiled geographic areas over the extent of an entire county. Digital Surface Model (DSM): A Digital Surface Model (DSM) captures both the natural and built/artificial features of the environment.
