- Abstract
- This data represents LiDAR elevation information for Racine County, Wisconsin in 2017. The following derivative products are available: classified LAS, hydro breaklines, a countywide DEM, and tiled DEM. [Geographic Extent: Kenosha and Racine County, Wisconsin covering approximately 626 square miles. Dataset Description: WI Kenosha-Racine Counties QL1 Lidar project called for the Planning, Acquisition, processing and derivative products of lidar data to be collected at a derived nominal pulse spacing (NPS) of 1 point every 0.35 meters. Project specifications are based on the U.S. Geological Survey National Geospatial Program Base Lidar Specification, Version 1.2. The data was developed based on a horizontal projection/datum of NAD83 (2011), Wisconsin State Plane, South Zone, U.S Survey Feet and vertical datum of NAVD88 (GEOID12B), U.S. Survey Feet. Lidar data was delivered as processed Classified LAS 1.4 files, formatted to 2,910 individual 2500 ft x 2500 ft tiles, and as tiled bare earth DEMs; all tiled to the same 2500 ft x 2500 ft schema. Ground Conditions: Lidar was collected April-May 2017, while no snow was on the ground and rivers were at or below normal levels. In order to post process the lidar data to meet task order specifications and meet ASPRS vertical accuracy guidelines, Ayers established a total of 66 ground control points that were used to calibrate the lidar to known ground locations established throughout the WI Kenosha-Racine Counties and IL 4 County QL1 project area. An additional 195 independent accuracy checkpoints, 116 in Bare Earth and Urban landcovers (116 NVA points), 79 in Tall Grass and Brushland/Low Trees categories (79 VVA points), were used to assess the vertical accuracy of the data. These checkpoints were not used to calibrate or post process the data.]Breaklines: [Product: Breakline data is used to hydroflatten the DEMs created for the WI Kenosha-Racine Counties QL1 lidar project. Breaklines are reviewed against lidar and existing 2015 imagery to verify completeness of capture.]Classified LAS: [Product: These lidar data are processed Classified LAS 1.4 files, formatted to individual 2500 ft x 2500 ft tiles; used to create 3D breaklines and hydro-flattened DEMs.]DEMs: [Product: These are Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data for Kenosha and Racine counties, Wisconsin as part of the deliverables for the QL1 Lidar project. Class 2 and Class 8 (ground and model keypoints) lidar points in conjunction with the hydro breaklines were used to create a 1-foot hydro-flattened Raster DEMs.]
- Purpose
- This data is intended for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production, or to provide a basemap to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. [To acquire detailed surface elevation data for use in conservation planning, design, research, floodplain mapping, dam safety assessments and elevation modeling, etc. Classified LAS files are used to show the manually reviewed bare earth surface. This allows the user to create Breaklines and Raster DEMs. The purpose of these lidar data was to produce high accuracy 3D hydro-flattened Digital Elevation Model (DEM) with a 1 foot cell size. These raw lidar point cloud data were used to create classified lidar LAS files, 3D breaklines, and hydro-flattened DEMs.]

Classified LAS: Point classification using semi-automated techniques on the point cloud to assign the feature type associated with each point. Lidar points can be classified into a number of categories including bare earth or ground, top of canopy, and water. The different classes are defined using numeric integer codes in the LAS files. Hydro Breaklines: Breaklines maintain the definition of water-related features in an elevation model. They are used to capture linear discontinuities in the surface, lake shorelines, single-line drains for small rivers, and double-line drains for large rivers. Countywide Digital Elevation Model (DEM): A DEM represents the bare-Earth surface, removing all natural and built features. The dataset contains a single file covering the entire county. Tiled Digital Elevation Model (DEM): A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) represents the bare-Earth surface, removing all natural and built features. The data contains (possibly) hundreds of individual files available to download as small tiled geographic areas over the extent of an entire county.
