- Abstract
- This polygon feature class represents boundaries of the 72 counties in Wisconsin. The data is derived from 1:24,000-scale sources. This feature class was last updated in June 2015; refer to the Data Lineage section of the ArcGIS metadata for information about the nature of the update. For more information, contact the WI DNR Bureau of Technology Services.
- Purpose
- This data set provides a generalized outline of the 72 counties in Wisconsin. It is not intended for use as a representation of statutory county boundaries. The level of accuracy does not support detailed local analysis. The data are intended for use with ArcView, ArcInfo, or other GIS software which support shapefile format data.

- Process Step
- Description
- In June 2015, DNR staff adjusted a boundary line between the Village of Pulaski in Brown County and the Town of Maple Grove in Shawano County.
- Process Step
- Description
- Linework from the Wisconsin 24K State Boundaries data layer was used for portions of county boundaries that form the periphery of the state. Linework from the 1:24,000-scale Landnet layer were used for portions of county boundaries that coincide with PLSS lines. Portions of county boundaries in surface water features in the interior of the state were digitized on-screen using 1:24,000-scale digital raster graphics. Linework from the 1:24,000-scale Hydrography layer were used for the portion of the shoreline around Sturgeon Bay in Door County. In all cases, the US Geological Survey's 1:24,000-scale digital raster graphics were used as the authority for the location of county boundary lines.

- Description
- In 2007, offset errors were discovered in the linework representing portions of Washington Island and Rock Island in Door County. The erroneous linework was replaced with the corresponding linework from the 1:24,000-scale Hydrography data. In the course of this work, other slight offsets were found and fixed; several of these were lines representing the boundary between Wisconsin and Michigan.

- Process Step
- Description
- Two polygons to the west of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior (coded as being part of Bayfield County) were found to be shoals rather than islands. The polygons were part of the 24K Hydrography database used as the original source for most of the Great Lakes shoreline in Wisconsin, and were erroneously included in the 24K County Boundaries data. DNR staff removed the polygons from the Wisconsin County Boundaries polygon (region) feature class in November, 2010.
